Wound Bed Preperation Flashcards
What is wound bed preparation?
Management of the wound bed in order to accelerate endogenous healing and/or to facilitate effectiveness of other therapeutic measures
What are the aims of wound bed preparation?
Identify and reduce necrotic burden
Identify and reduce bacterial burden and restore balance
Manage wound exudate/fluid to provide an optimum healing environment
Epithelial advancement
What are the three components of treating a non-healing wound?
Treat the cause
Local Wound care
Address patient issues and concerns
Describe slough
wet, stringy and yellow brown tissue
Describe necrotic tissue
dry, hard, leathery and brown/black tissue
How does non-viable/deficient tissue impede healing?
Encourages infection Hinder wound assessment Impede drainage Impede epithelial advancement Increase pressure
What is the main method of removing dead/non-viable tissue?
Debridement
What is debridement?
Method that removes dead, devitalized or contaminated tissue from the wound bed
What are the different forms of debridement?
Mechanical Enzymatic Autolytic Larval Sharp Surgical
What is maceration?
When the wound is producing lots of exudate and thus becomes excessively moist
