Nationalism
Extreme pride in ones own country (more intense than patriotism)
Alliance
An agreement between countries to help each other in a time of need.
Militarism
A competition between countries to see who can create the most powerful weapons.
Imperialism
Building an empire by taking over other countries.
Neutrality
Choosing to remain independent or removed from a conflict. Not choosing a side.
Propaganda
Information or ideas spread by a group or government to promote its cause or ideas or to damage an opposing cause or idea.
Triple Entente
Allied Powers
Great Britain, France, United States, Russia, Romania, Serbia, Greece.
Triple Alliance
Central Powers
Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, Ottoman Empire.
Lusitania
A luxurious British passenger ship torpedoed by Germany, killing 1,198 people, including 198 Americans on May 7, 1915.
Zimmerman Note
A note sent in code to Mexico by the German foreign ministry suggesting Mexico and Germany become allies. Germany promised to help Mexico reclaim lost territory in New Mexico, Texas and Arizona.
Trench Warfare
New war tactic where soldiers dug networks of ditches to move through battlefields. Separated by a “no-man’s-land” filled with barbed wire and landmines. Regretfully ineffective and filled with disease.
Chemical Weapon
First used by the Germans and proved effective as a defensive weapon but not for decisive attack.
Isolationism
Unwillingness to form alliances. A policy of remaining apart from the interests of other countries.
Trigger
An event that creates an immediate reaction
Cause
An event or events that over time lead to a reaction.
