Fueled rivalries between powerful nations. This competition sometimes led to wars in places far from Europe.

The policy of building up strong armed forces to prepare for war.
Alliance System
When countries agree to support one another in case of an attack (i.e. Triple Alliance - Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy); A minor incident could result in a major war.
