One of the causes of World War I. Treaties created between nations so that if two countries have a conflict, this will bring in all of their allies

One of the causes of World War I. National Pride
The Balkans
Area in Southern Europe. Increase in nationalism in the region prior to World War I. Formed an alliance with Russia. They wanted to bde free from the rule of Austria-Hungary.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Austrian Archduke who was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist (Black Hand member).
Triple Alliance 1882
Pre-WW I Alliance between Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy
Triple Entente 1907
Pre-WWI Alliance between France, Russia, Great Britain
Allied Powers (“Allies”)
Alliance during WWI: Great Britain, France, Russia and Serbia (later United States will be added)

Alliance during WWI: Germany and Austria-Hungary
Schlieffen Plan
Germany’s plan to deal with the two fronts of the war. Deal with France first in the West and then take care of Russia in the East.
Zimmerman Note
Note sent by Germany to Mexico (1917) to try and get Mexico to go to war with the United States to keep the United States out of World War I. In exchange for support – Germany would help Mexico reconquer
land taken by US in Mexico – American War
§ Texas, New Mexico, Arizona. The note was intercepted by the British before it made it to Mexico.
How was WWI different from prior wars?
This is the first major war post-Industrial Revolution. There are new, more sophisticated and lethal weapons.
Why were trenches used during World War I?
Use of new weapons made soldiers find new tactics in order to succeed in war.
What new weapons were used during World Ward I?
Machine guns Poison gas Flame throwers Grenade launchers French Renault tank The airplanes The Zeppelin (large, gas-filled balloon) Allied Ships Sunk by U-Boats (submarines)
What is morale?
Spirit/support of the people
How did morale change during the war?
People were very patriotic at first but then the reality of war set in. There were large numbers of casualties, food shortages, and failures at war. Letters written home by soldiers told of the horrors of the war.
Lusitania
In May 2015, a German U-boat sinks this passenger ship and kills 129 U.S. citizens.
Total War
Demands put on citizens at home while the soldiers are off fighting the war.
Victory Gardens
Citizens at home were encouraged to use the land to grow their own food to deal with food shortages.
How did governments ensure that war needs were met?
Controlled industries, rationing Raise money (borrow and taxes)
How did the war impact women?
Women worked outside of the home in jobs traditionally held by men. They were paid less than men for the same work but the jobs still paid better than “traditional” jobs for women. Women discovered benefits of financial independence and mobility.
