What caused world war 1
The Anglo German rivalry caused some tension in the west of Europe
Serbias alliance was called into battle when the heir to the throne was killed by a rebellion

When did world war 1 start
World war 1 started in august 1914 and ended in may 1918

Britain entered France 7 days after the war started on 23rd of august

Germany advance into France in September 1914
What was obviously not going to happen by the first year
It became obvious that the war wasn’t going to end by Christmas
What were the 3 trench types
Front trench was where all the battles took place behind no man’s land
Second trench was were the injured were taken
The dugout was were soldiers could rest and heal up
The soldiers spent a week in each trench per month
What shape were the trenches and why was this an advantage
The trenches were zig zagged and this was useful so machine gunners didn’t mow all the men down
What was the weapons used by soldiers
Each soldier had an Enfield rifle, a few grenades , a bayonet attached to the gun and a gas mask for mustard and chlorine gas attacks
What were illegal weapons in war
If you had a saw tooth bayonet you were shot by firing squad as it was too brutal even for war

The battle of the Somme (also known as the bug push) happened 1st of July 1916
What was a Blighty wound
A Blighty wound was an injury so severe you had to leave the war
What happened in the battle of the Somme
The battle happened at zero hour where the 36th ulster division bombarded the German trenches for a week not knowing the Germans where in their bunkers 10m underground.
As soon as the artillery moved towards the German trenches the Germans raced out from their bunkers and mowed them down with machine guns as they all marched in a straight line so it was easy for the machine gunners. The ulster division lost 20,000 soldiers that first day although it would go on to last 140 more days which would be broken up into smaller categories which where mostly all British victories
What was the treaty of Versailles
The treaty of Versailles was the agreement that the war would end on the 11th of November 1914
With the German forces surrendering the stolen land and resources back to France and Belgium from whom they invaded and they had to agree that they wouldn’t use the military forces again
What happened in 1917
USA joins the war in June 1917 and Russia surrenders and leaves the war after the treaty of Brest listovk in November 1917
