Science
Intellectual and practical activity that systematically studies the structure and behaviour of physical and natural world through observation and experiment. It is systematically organized body of knowledge on a particular subject.
Paradigm
Provides lense, frame and process inquiry it’s built upon.
Power of perspective
It affects how we think, how we feel, and what we do.
Worldview
How you view the world, what you accept as true about the world, what’s real ad true for us. It is influenced by family, culture, society and education.
Inquiry
Seeking truth to solve problems. It leads to knowledge development.
Nursing science
The process of inquiry to create and develop nursing’s body of knowledge.
Ontology
What exists? What is reality?
Epistemology
Nature and theory of knowledge.
Methodology
Methods applied to field of study.
Positivism/empiricism
It involves control and prediction. The scientific method is used to develop general abstract laws and to predict and describe patterns in the real world which is driven by cause and effect.
Criticism of positivism
- Impossible to control many factors in humans
- Does not recognize other forms of knowing
- Does not reflect values of holism, person-centred care, and understanding of human experiences.
Interpretive approach
Emphasizes understanding of meaning individuals ascribe to their actions and actions of others.It studies people and their lived experiences.
Criticisms of interpretive approach
- Ignores reality of physiological problems related to health and disease.
- Nursing is not social science and one must acknowledge physiological and psychological phenomena.
- Qualitative data are interesting stories that are not generalizable and do not advance the profession.
Critical Worldview
It deals with emancipation, the method is dialogue and it seeks to free people from the effects of societal pressure, structure and counters oppression.
