What is offensive realism ?
The belief that states wish to maximise power and so will take advantage of one another to further their interests. Therefore the threat of war remains present.
What is defensive realism ?
Whereby states wish to maximise security and therefore will avoid going to war, however this leads to ongoing relentless tension.
What does Hobbes believe ?
That humans are driven by non rational appetites, power for power.
He believed in the state of nature ego, selfish etc state of human nature.
What is Morgenthau?
A classical realist who believed ‘politics if the struggle for power over men’.
What is soft power?
The ability to influence other actors by persuading them to follow or agree to aspirations that provide the desired behaviour.
What is hard power ?
Power exercised through threats or rewards, typically involving military ‘sticks’ or economic ‘carrots’. Getting a state to do something using force.
What is a great power?
A great power is a state that is ranked amongst the most powerful in the hierarchical state system.
What is a super power?
It is described as a great power ‘plus greater mobility of power’.
What is polarity?
It refers to he number of independent power centres in the international system.
What is a multipolarity?
A system throughly with several centres of power, which are not grouped into alliances.
What is the hegemonic stability theory ?
That a dominant actor in a unipolarity will act as a ‘world police’ and guarantee economic and financial stability.
