Constantinople
The capital of the Byzantine Empire, established by emperor Constantine in 330BCE. This capital city became the center of trade and European culture after the fall of Rome
Byzantine Empire
Formerly the Eastern Half of Roman Empire , this Empire had it’s capital at Constantinople and was the center of the Eastern Orthodox Church.
Justinian
One of the most famous Byzantine rulers - he invested in infrastructure in Constantinople and codified Roman law into Justinian’s Law Code.
Roman Catholic
One sect of the Christian Church -headed by the Pope. the center of the Roman Catholic Church in Rome- priests in the church were required to be celibate , praying to saints was allowed.
Monk
A person dedicated to a life of devotion to a religion. Christian monks often would create communes and monasteries where they sought out for religious experience.
Eastern Orthodox
One sect of the Christian church-headed by the Patriarch. the center of the Eastern Orthodox church was in Constantinople - the priests in the church were allowed to be married, praying to saints and idols of any form were not allowed.
Missionary
A person dedicated to spreading the word of a religion and gaining converts- Buddhism , Islam , and Christianity all have missionaries in order to spread religions.
Feudalism
A political and economic system in which nobles were granted the use of land that legally belonged to the King. In return , the nobles agreed to give their loyalty and military services to the King. Used in Western Europe after the fall of Rome.
Great Schism
Occurred in 1054 when the Pope and the Patrician simultaneously excommunicated each other refusing to recognize each other as true Christians. Formally split the Christian church into 2 sects : roman Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox
Serfs
The lowest class in a Feudal society. These people were bound to land they worked on for protection.
