Civilizations near rivers usually meant there was fertile soil. With fertile soil the agriculture would flourish. When the agriculture flourished there was a surplus. ESSAY QUESTION:
What are some of the “ancient roots” of our modern day political and legal systems in America? Give examples from the political and legal systems of the Ancient Middle East (Unit 3) and Ancient Greece and Rome (Unit 4).

A

Modern American politics were shaped by the development of early civilizations. In the Middle East, the code of Hammurabi majorly impacted the verdicts of people in court. Because of this famous code we see suspects of crimes face a punishment that fits their crime. Another early middle eastern collection of laws that impacted American politics was Hebrew code. Hebrew code gave our country basic laws that can be seen as morals such as “thou shall not kill”. Ancient European societies such as Greece and Rome have also influenced American politics. The Athenians in Greece gave us the democracy. The Greeks also gave us juries, assemblies, and the idea that lower class citizens can hold office. Like the Greeks the Romans influenced us with assemblies. The romans also gave us natural law and the senate. In conclusion, ancient world ideas about politics can still be seen today in modern day America.
