Workshop 2 - Measures of centrality Flashcards
Variable
Everything that is being measured, questioned or kept a record of in research is contained in variables.
Nominal variable
Based on qualitative classification without any logical ranking. E.g. Colour - no inherent ranking
Ordinal variable
Qualitative classification with a logical ranking. E.g. Weather alarms - 0 -> yellow -> orange -> red
Interval variable
Measured on a numerical scale. Interval variables are continuous variables. Interval variables do not have an absolute zero. E.g. Sea level (negative sea level is also possible)
Ratio variable
Measured on a numerical scale. Ratio variables are continuous variables. Ratio variables have an absolute 0. E.g. Height or weight
Mode
The most common.
Count how many times each variable come up in your data set.
Median
The middle value.
- Order all the values from low to high
- Count how many values there are
- Split the number in two and round it up
- Count from the beginning to the value from step 3 to find the middle value
Mean
The average.
Add all of the numbers and divide them by the amount.
Outlier
Something/someone which is very different compared to the rest of the group.
