Workshop 2 (Distinguishing Between Stem Cells of Different Lineages) Flashcards
1
Q
What are the four main methods used to distinguish between stem cells of different lineages?
A
- Flow cytometry
- Cell doubling time
- Comparison of Rb phosphorylation status
- Regulatory protein expression

Q
Describe the principle behind flow cytometry.
A
Flow cytometry is a method than enables the quantification of cells that have been fluorescently labelled. It is useful for quantifying the DNA content of cells and can be used to determine cell cycle phase. Using a dye that stains DNA, it is possible to separate cells based on the intensity of fluorescence.
