Workshop #1: Cross cultural communication Flashcards
disease vs illness
Illness is defined as the ill health the person identifies themselves with, often based on self reported mental or physical symptoms
Disease, on the other hand, is defined as a condition that is diagnosed by a physician. Diseases like HIV/AIDS, hypertension, diabetes, measles take up a lot of health care expenses
primary prevention definition
Trying to prevent a disease from happening. Examples are vaccination, screening (eg colonoscopies), counseling
secondary prevention definition
already have a disease, but these efforts are to make sure it doesn’t progress.
health definition
physical, mental, and social well-being; not necessarily the absence of a disease
culture definition, and influence on health
the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group.
culture influences perception of illness and health practices
race vs ethnicity
Race refers to a person’s physical characteristics, such as bone structure and skin, hair, or eye color.
Ethnicity, however, refers to cultural factors, including nationality, regional culture, ancestry, and language.
stereotype definition
a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.
generalization definition
A generalization is taking one or a few facts and making a broader, more universal statement
bias definition
prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair.
assumptions definition
something accepted as true without proof
implicit vs explicit bias
Explicit bias is conscious bias; controllable.
Implicit bias is subconscious bias; ingrained and more complex; normal and often unavoidable
health care disparity definition
differences in health and health care between populations or groups of people; maybe caused by inequality in treatment.
health disparity vs health care disparity definition
health disparity is a higher burden of illness, injury, disability or mortality experiences by one group relative to another
health care disparity is differences between groups of health insurance coverage, access to and use of care, and quality of care
social determinants of health definition
conditions in which people are born, work, and live. These are mostly responsible for the health inequities. They are unfair and unavoidable differences in health status between countries.
social determinants examples
economic stability, neighborhood and physical environment, education, food, community and social context, health care system
