What do we mean by a ‘hazard’?
The object or substance that can cause harm.
What do we mean by a ‘risk’?
What harm the object or substance can cause
What do we mean by a ‘control measure’?
How you will reduce or eliminate the risk to yourself and others
When we light a bunsen burner, should the air hole be open or closed?
Always closed.
When using a bunsen to heat, should we be using the blue flame or the yellow flame?

If a chemical is labelled as ‘toxic’, what does that tell you about it?
It is poisonous.
If a chemical is labelled as ‘flammable’, what does that tell you about it?
It can catch fire and burn.
If a chemical is labelled as ‘inflammable’, what does that tell you about it?
It can catch fire and burn. Flammable and Inflammable mean the same thing!
If a substance is labelled as ‘corrosive’, what does that tell you about it?
It will corrode or ‘burn away’ substances that it touches.
Which piece of safety equipment must be used during every practical lesson?
Goggles/eye protection (and common sense!)
