Working properties, Paper Flashcards
Ductility definition, example
The ability of a material to be stretched or pulled without breaking
Copper is ductile so can be drawn out to make wire
Elasticity definition, example
The ability to return to its original shape after compression or stretching
Lycra is used for sportswear to provide freedom of movement
Hardness definition, example
The ability to withstand impact wear abrasion an indentation
Tungsten is hard used for knives drills saws
Malleability definition, example
The ability to be bent and cracked without cracking and splitting
Gold, copper, silver and lead can all be easily hammered into shape
Strength definition, example
The ability to withstand for such as pressure compression tension or shear
Maybe strong in one fourth, but not other
Concrete is strong under compression, but not tension
Toughness definition, example
The ability to absorb shock without fracturing
Kevlar body armour, absorbs impact
Describe the difference between toughness and hardness
Toughness is the ability of a material to withstand an energy or false before it becomes fractured
Hardness is a measure of resistance to abrasion, wear scratching or penetration
