Working Model Of Memory Flashcards
What is the role of the central executive?
Directs attention to particular tasks and controls the other systems by determining how the resources will be allocated.
What does the WMM focus on?
The short term memory (STM)
What are the two components of the Phonological Loop?
- Phonological store (inner ear)
* Articulatory process (inner voice)
What type of information does the phonological loop control?
Auditory
What is the role of the visuo-spatial sketch pad?
Processes visual and spatial information (how things look and where they are)
What year was the Episodic Buffer added?
2000
What is the Episodic buffer?
A general store, added later to account for things that use both visual and acoustic information.
Baddeley and Hitch found that if the tasks require the same components..?
They can’t be preformed at the same time.
E.g. Driving and playing a game.
What did the case study of KF show about his STM and LTM?
His STM was damaged (digit span of 1) but his LTM was normal
How does the case study of KF support the WMM?
He remembered words if they were presented visually rather than auditory. Which suggests that the damage mainly affected his phonological loop as oppose to his visuo-spatial sketch pad.
What are the criticisms of the WMM?
- The exact role of the central executive is unclear.
* Suggests that the central executive isn’t a unitary system like the other aspects of the model.
