Working Model Flashcards
Who made the working model of memory
Baddeley and Hitch 1974
Name the five main features
Central executive,
phonological loop,
visuo-spatial sketchpad,
episodic buffer,
long term knowledge
What does the central executive do?
Directs the operation of the two slave systems (visuo-spatial sketchpad and phonological loop) when we encode incoming info
What does the phonological loop do?
It is a articulatory control system that’s responsible for acoustic encoding.
What are the two sub-systems of the phonological loop?
Articulatory control system and phonological store they are concerned with out production and perception of speech
What does the visuo-spatial sketchpad do?
Processes date visually and is specialised for visual and spatial encoding
What year did Baddeley add another slave system?
2000
What does the episodic buffer do?
Links information across the slave systems. Also has links to LTM and semantical meanings
What are the three sub-systems of long-term knowledge?
Language
Episodic LTM
visual sematics
What is a strength of WM?
Posner PET scans show the different area of the brain are active.
Makes it more credible
Whats some weaknesses?
Lack ecological validity
Lab not real life
Function of central executive is too vague
Theory may be oversimplistic
