Working Memory Model Flashcards
four features of working memory?
central executive
phonological loop
visuospatial sketchpad
episodic buffer
central executive?
acts as a supervisor to the ‘slave systems’ and determines which information is attended to.
limited capacity
phonological loop?
temporary storage for auditory sounds
- phonological store (inner ear) stores words you hear
- articulatory process (inner voice) repeats words
visuospatial sketchpad?
temporary memory for visual and spatial information visual cache (visual data e.g. colour form) inner scribe (records arrangement of objects)
episodic buffer?
backup store for info which communicates with LTM and the slave systems
supported by dual task
its easier to do two different tasks if they use different processes than if they use the same one
how does the KF motorcycle accident support the WMM?
he suffered brain damage and damaged his STM and his verbal information was affected. However visual information still performed normally, therefore showing that there are separate stores within the STM
limitations?
- little is known about the CE
- no link between the WMM and LTM
