Working Memory Model Flashcards
Role of the central executive
Seen as the boss of the system
Allocated info to slave systems (eg VSS and PL)
Limited capacity so selectively attends to particular types of info
Role of the phonological loop
Deals with acoustic/ verbal info
Consists of phonological store (holds recently heard info) and the articulatory control processes (rehearses info from PS to keep a hold of info)
Limited capacity and duration
Recalling a list of words
Role of the Visuo spatial sketch pad
Stores visual and spatial info
Consists of visual cache (form and colour) and inner scribe (spatial and physical relationships between objects)
Cannot multi task due to limited capacity and duration
Planning a route in head
Role of the episodic buffer
Acts as a general store and permits other stores (PL and VSS) to process info simultaneously
Definition of the WMM
Alternative model to explaining the STM
Consists of the 4 key components: central executive, phonological loop, Visuo spatial sketch pad and the episodic buffer
Advantages and disadvantages of the WMM
- Can explain dual processing
- Know least about central executive
- Brain damage studies such as KF support WMM
- Brain scanning tech. provide evidence
One advantage of the WMM is that it can explain dual processing
Situation when required to remember a sequence of numbers and complete verbal reasoning
Would say is possible due to simultaneous processing
More complete and advanced
Limitation is that CE is the part known least about
No clear idea of how this works, some psych. believe that the explanation that it controls and allocates info is too vague and should be more complex
Reduces validity
Further advantage is that brain damage studies such as KF have supported the WMM
Found to have no long term learning issues yet sever impairment to his immediate memory, particularly auditory info, damage was to PL
Demonstrates that there are different components of STM for visual/ verbal info as damage restricted to the PL
Brain scamming provide evidence to support the WMM
Shown different parts are active when processing visual/ auditory info
Separate areas of brain for types of info- support idea of separate visual or auditory components
