working memory model Flashcards
who created the working memory model?
Baddley & Hitch (1974)
what is considered the boss of the model?
central executive
what are the slave components?
phonological loop, visuo-spatial sketchpad and episodic buffer
what are the subgroups of the phonological loop?
articulatory process and phonological store
what are the subgroups of the visuo-spatial sketchpad?
inner scribe and visual cache
what does the central executive do?
it monitors incoming data and coordinates the activities of the 3 sub-systems
what is the phonological loop?
it processes info in terms of sound and includes both spoken and written material
what is the articulatory process and phonological store?
AP - maintenance rehearsal (repeating words in a loop to keep them in WMM)
PS - stores the words you hear
what’s the visuo-spatial sketchpad?
processes visual and spatial info in mental space (inner eye)
what’s the inner scribe and visual cache?
IS - records arrangement of objects in a visual field
VC - stores visual data/info
what is the episodic buffer?
it binds and integrates material from other subsystems into a single memory - the bridge between working memory and ltm
coding, capacity, duration of phonological loop?
coding - auditory
capacity - limited
duration - around 2 secs
coding, capacity, duration of visuo-spatial sketchpad?
coding - visual and spatial
capacity - limited
duration -
coding, capacity, duration of episodic buffer?
coding - multi-modal
capacity - limited (4+/-1)
duration -
strength of working memory model?
patient kf - motorbike accident and had brain damage to stm, he had poor ability to for auditory info but could still process visual info, proves more to stm in msm - wwm shows phonological loop was damaged but visuo-spatial sketchpad was intact
limitation of working memory model?
the nature of the central executive is not clear, Baddley (2003) said the central executive is the most important but least understood component and needs more than just ‘attention’ - challenges integrity of wmm
what’s the central executive?
coordinates the activities of the subsystems and allocates processing resources to those activities
