Working Memory Model Flashcards
What does the term working memory mean?
an active store which holds and manipulates information that is currently being consciously thought about
What does the working memory model suggest?
it is split up into three components allowing for temporary storage or verbal and visa-spatial material
What are the two main section of the central executive
Phonological Lopp & Visuospatial Sketchpad
What does the phonological loop consist of?
THE SLAVE SYSTEMS:
Articulatory Control System: subvocal repetition of words. It rehearses the spoken acoustic information from the phonological store, converts written material to acoustic material and holds information ready for us tp speak. It is used to prepare speech and to think in words.
Phonological Store: Stores words recently heard. Written words must be converted to spoken words to enter the phonological store.
What is the visuospatial sketchpad?
Deals with visual and spatial information and the relationship between them. It has two sections: visual cache which stores visual data, and the Inner scribe which records the arrangement of objects in the visual field.
What is the central executive?
It allocates attention and controls attention processes, has a limited capacity; if it is controlling one task, it is difficult to do another task at the same time, it controls and coordinates the two slave systems deciding which information is attended to and which parts of the working memory to send it to.
What is the episodic buffer?
This was added to the model in 2000. It connects visual, spatial and verbal information and maintains time sequencing.
What Study demonstrates the separate existence of the visual spatial sketchpad.
Baddeley asked ppt to complete two visual tasks simultaneously:
- two visual tasks (tracking a light and describing the letter F or
- one visual and one verbal task simultaneously
it showed more pmts had more difficulty doing the simultaneous visual tasks, has a limited capacity.
What case study shows clinical evidence for the working memory model
Due to brain damage in a motorcycle accident, KF had poor memory for verbal material in the STM, but he could processionals visual information. This suggests that only his phonological loop had been damaged. This supports the existence of separate visual 2nd acoustic store as suggested by the working memory mode.
What evaluation point shows that the Working memory provides a more thorough explanation of storage and processing in the STM than the multi store model.
The WMM demonstrates that the STM involves many processing systems and shows how these systems work in interaction with each other. Compared to the rigid structure and processing in the MSM, the WMM is a very flexible system which controls and coordinates a range of cognitive activities.
What evaluation points shows how the WMM is helpful for the assessment and treatment of people with processing difficulties?
The separate functioning systems in the STM when some brain damaged patients appear to suffer impairment to some functions of STM and not others. For example the WMM was useful in explaining why a motorcycle accident left KF with poor memory for verbal material in the STM. The WMM has strong positive applications that are useful for society
What evaluation point helps the validity of the model
the fact their is both laboratory and case study evidence
