Working In The Labortory Flashcards
What is the Bunsen burner used for
It is used to heat
What is the measuring cylinder used for
Used to measure specific and and accurate amounts of liquid
What is the evaporating dish used for
Used to remove water from a solution by heating over Bunsen burner
What is the test tube used for
Used to mix or hold small amounts of liquid and other substances in an experiment
What is the boiling tube used for
Used to heat small amounts of liquid or substances in the Bunsen burner flame
What is the beaker used for
This is used to heat liquids in and to combine substances during an experiment
What is the dropper used for
Used to collect and dispense small amounts of liquid
What is the Conical flask used for
Used to mix substances together
What is the test tube holder used for
Used to safely hold multiple test tubes
What is the gauze mat used for
This sits on the tripod and helps the transfer of heat evenly onto the glassware
What is the funnel used for
Used to transfer liquid into vessels that have small openings
What is the stirring rod used for
Used to swirl liquids together in experiments to mix them
What is the tongs used for
Used to pick up and hold substances such as metal in a flame
What is the tripod used for
Used to support glassware above the Bunsen burner
What is the tripod used for
Used to support glassware above the Bunsen burner
Name the parts of the Bunsen burner
Flame, Air hole, rubber tubing, base, collar, barrel
What is an independent variable?
The variable that is changed. The independent variable needs a range of at least 5 values
What is a dependent variable
The variable that is measured. The dependent variable always needs a unit of measurement eg centimetres, seconds
What is a control variable
It’s a variable that stays the same. The control variables ensure the test is fair, and that change measured in the dependent variable can only be due to a change in the independent variable and not because of some other factors
What is the CUTGLASS rule?
Crosses for each data point
Units on each axis
Title (y-axis and x-axis)
Line of best fit
Axis labels

How do you properly draw a scientific drawing
Sharp pencil, 2-dimensional, clean lines, no shading, clear labels, ruled straight lines.
