Working characteristics of materials Flashcards
Conductivity
A material’s ability to transmit heat or electricity.
Relative hardness
This compares the hardness of one material to another. There are standardized hardness tests, but a simple test is scratch resistance. A harder material can scratch a softer one.
Density
The mass of a material per unit volume.
Toughness
A material’s ability to absorb energy before breaking.
Ductility
A material’s ability to be stretched into thin wires without breaking.
Tensile Strength
The maximum stress a material can withstand before pulling apart.
Compressive Strength
The maximum stress a material can withstand before crushing
Malleability
A material’s ability to be hammered or pressed into thin sheets without breaking.
