WorkBook #3 #4 Flashcards
What does (emit) mean?
Creating light or to give off its own light.
What does (reflect) mean?
Reflecting or bouncing light off it.
What are the names of the layers of Earth’s atmosphere?
in order
Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, Ionosphere, Exosphere.
Fact about Troposphere?
Weather is formed here.
Fact about Stratosphere?
Ozone layer, Jet stream.
Fact about Mesosphere?
Protection from meteors, coldest.
Fact about Thermosphere?
Hottest, widest, least amount of air molecules.
Fact about Ionosphere?
Electrically charged ions, Northern Lights
Fact about Exosphere?
Where satellites orbit.
What are three reasons Earth can support life?
Liquid water, Breathable atmosphere, Right distance from the sun (temperature).
What objects in space emit light?
Sun, Stars.
What objects in space reflect light?
Moon, Planets, meteors, comets.
Why is it harmful to look at the sun with your naked eye?
The UV rays will damage your eyes permanently.
What are 2 safe methods for viewing the sun?
Pinhole Camera, Welder’s mask.
Why does the sun appear to move across the sky each day?
The rotation of he Earth on its axis.
What causes night and day?
The rotation of the earth on its axis.
What is the difference between direct and indirect rays from the sun?
Direct rays are head-on and stronger rays. Indirect rays are spread out rays and are weaker.
What causes the rays to become more or less direct?
The rays change based on if you are tilted away from the Sun or toward.
What are the 2 reasons that Earth experiences 4 different seasons each year?
The never changing tilt of the Earth’s axis and the Earth’s revolution around the Sun.
When do the spring and fall equinoxes occur?
March 21 and September 21.
When do the summer and winter solstices occur?
June 21 and December 21.
What happens to the amount of daylight on each of these dates?
The equinoxes hours of day and night are equal.
The summer solstice is the longest day of the year.
The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year.
What causes solstices and equinoxes?
The Earth’s revolution around the Sun.
How do the seasons compare in the northern and southern hemisphere?
The seasons are opposites. Summer in the North is Winter in the South. The equinoxes both have the same amount of day and night hours.
