Work, power, energy, simple machines Flashcards
What is work?
Work is the force done on an object when the object moves in the same direction as the force exerted.
What is the equation for work?
Work= forcexdistance
What is the Si unit for work?
Joules
What is power?
The amount of work done on the object in unit of time.
How do you calculate power?
Power= work/time
What is the Si unit for power?
Watt
How do machines make work easier?
Changing the amount of force you exert, the distance over which you exert the force, or the direction in which you exert the force.
What Is mechanical advantage?
The number of times a machine increases the force exerted on it.
How do you calculate mechanical advantage?
Ma= output force/input force
How do you calculate the effeciency of a machine?
Effeciency= output work/input work x 100%
What are the 6 basic types of simple machines?
Screw, wheel and axle, wedge, inclined plane, pulley and axle.
What changes the amount of pressure?
The area over which the force is distributed. As it increases, pressure decreases.
How do you calculate pressure?
Pressure= force/area
What happens to the atmospheric pressure as the elevation increases?
The pressure decreases.
What happens to water pressure as depth increases?
Water pressure increases.
What is bouyant force?
A force that acts in the opposite direction from the force of gravity, so it makes an object feel lighter.
How do you calculate density?
Density= mass/volume
What is density?
Density is the mass per units of volume of a substance.
What is pascal’s priciple?
When force is applied to a confined fluid, the change in pressure is transmitted equally through all parts of the fluid.
What is Bernoulli’s principle?
As the speed of moving fluid increases, the pressure within the fluid decreases.
What is energy?
Energy is the ability to do work or cause change.
How do you calculate energy?
Kinetic energy= 1/2x mass x volume
Gravitational potential energy= weight x height
What are some of the main types of energy?
Mechanical, thermal, electrical, chemical, nuclear, and electromagnetic.
What is the law of conservational energy?
The law that states that energy cannot be created or destroyed.
