Work Hard Flashcards
Define bioaccumulation
The build up of toxins in a food chain
Which of these pollutants cause bioaccumulation in the environment?
A.Fertilisers
B. Pesticides
C. Sewage
B. Pesticides
Which organisms in a food chain are most likely to suffer severely from bioaccumulation?
A. Primary consumer
B. Producers
C. Tertiary/ apex consumers
C. Tertiary/apex consumers
Give two examples of bioaccumulated toxins and state their potential effect on the tertiary/apex consumer
DDT
reduces thickness of egg shells causing them to break while incubated
mercury
Damages the nerves and reproducive system
The above diagram shows the process of eutrophication. With reference to the image, explain how excess fertilisers in a pond could reduce the oxygen concentration of water and destroy the ecosystem.
Farmers use fertilisers and untreated sewage, then the rain comes causing leaching into the lakes causing excess nutrients and richness which causes algal blooming, blocking out the light meaning plants respire as there is low sun light using up oxygen and dying and fish will then suffocate due to lack of oxygen
Match up the following
1. Leaching The state or process of rotting/decaying, as induced by microorganisms
2. Blooming The process of nitrate fertilisers and untreated sewage washing from farmlands to lakes and rivers
3. Decomposition. rapid increase or accumulation in the population of algae in freshwater or marine water systems.
- The state or process of rotting/decaying, as induced by microorganisms
1.The process of nitrate fertiliseres and untreated sewage washing from farmlands to lakes and river
2.Rapid increase or accumulation in the population of algae in freshwater or marine water systems.
Define nanoscience
Nanoscience is the study of objects on the nanometre scale
Define nanoparticules
Nanoparticules are 1-100nm in size and made up of a few hundreds of atoms
Explain why nanoparticles may have properties that are different from the properties in bulk
- High surface area to volume ratio
- Difffenet size and scale
3.nanoscience scale
List some examples of uses of nano particles
Sunscream
Clothing
Cosmetics
Electronics
Medicine
What is a composite material?
A material that is made up of atleast 2 other materials
Why is it better to make boats out of fibreglass than out of glass or plastic?
Best properties of both materials
Write down one other use of fibreglass.
Roof
What type of material is concrete?
Composite
What are the three things that make up concrete
Sand ,gravel, cement
