what is energy?
the capacity to do work
what is work?
a measure of the transfer of energy from one object to another
what is positive work?
the force is applied in the same direction as the resulting movement
what is negative work?
the force is applied in the opposite direction to the resulting movement
what is the work-energy relationship?
work done by an external force acting on an object will cause a change in energy of that object
what is kinetic energy?
energy possessed by a body because it’s moving
what is potential energy?
stored energy that can become kinetic energy
what are the two types of potential energy?
gravitational potential (height) and strain potential (deformation)
what is gravitational potential energy?
energy due to the relative position above a surface
what is strain potential energy?
due to the deformation of an object
what is mechanical power?
the rate of doing work
how can comparisons in power be facilitated?
by expressing power as a normalised value (W/kg)
