[Work and Conservation of Energy] Flashcards
- Work Done By a Force
W. Force x distance moved in the direction of the force. Equals energy transferred. It is a scalar quantity. Measured in joules, J. W = F x cos θ.
- Energy
E. The capacity for doing work. It is a scalar quantity. Measured in joules, J. Forms of energy include: kinetic, gravitational potential, chemical, elastic potential, electrical potential, nuclear, radiant (or EM), sound, internal (or heat or thermal).
- Joule
J. One joule is the energy transferred when a one newton force moves a distance of one metre in the direction of the force.
1 J = 1 Nm.
- Principle of Conservation of Energy
The total energy of a closed system remains constant; energy can never be created or destroyed, but it can be transferred from one form into another. Σ E IN = Σ E OUT.
