Work Flashcards
Work had to be available in locality of workhouse
had to be possible to do it inside confines of workhouse
Philosophical stance of commissioners made situation even more difficult
said work done inside workhouse could not pay more than cost of maintaining a pauper, otherwise no incentive for pauper to return to labour market
Some paupers (women and children) worked to help maintain workhouse
worked in laundries, kitchens and sink rooms, worked as cleaners, attendants, childminders and slippers-out
If work that was economical and easy to perform in workhouse couldn’t be found
monotonous work given to paupers e.g. chopping wood and smashing limestone into small pieces to make roads
