Map Key
A section of the map used to explain each of the map symbols
Map coordinates
A system of lines on a map used to help identify the position of different objects or places
Globe
A three-dimensional map of the world
Equator
Imaginary line that runs from east to west around the centre of earth.It exists at the midway point between the north and south poles and represents 0 degrees latitude
Grid
Series of crossing lines that create square or rectangles which help us identify specific areas of a map
Hemispheres
Division of the world into two halves used to divide the world according to latitude (north to south) creating northern and southern hemispheres
Latitude
Way of measuring your position on earth in a north to south direction.Lines of latitude are measured in degrees
Longitude
Measuring your position on earth in a east to west direction it’s measured in degrees
Prime meridian
A non-existent line that runs from east to west through the centre of earth
Contour lines
A system of lines used to show when the height of the land increases or decreases
Scale
Helps identify how big an area actually is in reality.Its shown as 1:100
Elevation
The height above a specific level,such as sea level
Precipitation
Water that falls from the clouds towards the ground,in the form of rain,snow,hail,etc.
Continents
The large landmasses that cover the Earth
Global Positioning System(GPS)
A global navigation satellite system used to determine the ground position of an object
