Direct Object
A noun that follows an action verb. It receives the action
Tense of a Verb
Shows the time of action;past, present, and future
Commas
Are used to separate items in a series, to separate parts of dates, to separate parts of names
Colons
Are used to separate hours and minutes in time or to introduce a list and follow a business letter.
Semicolons
Are used to separate independent clauses in a sentence
Parentheses
Are used to show that information is not part of main statement
Quotation marks
Used to show the beginning and end of someone’s exact words
Sentence
A group of words that express a complete thought; has a subject and predicate
Noun
Names a person, place, or thing
Subject pronoun
Indicates who or what performs the action of a sentence as in: I, you, he, she, it, they, and we are subjects.
Object pronoun
Indicates who and what receives action from: me, you, him, her, it, us, and them are objects
Singular Noun
Names a person place or thing
Plural noun
Names more than one
Possessive noun

Tell what kind of, which one, or how many
Adverb
Tells how, where, when, and to what extent
Verb
Word that expresses action or a state of being
Predicate
The sentence part that says something about the subject. It contains the verb or verb phrases
Simple Sentence
A sentence that expresses only one complete thought
Compound Sentence
Made up of 2 simple sentences joined by a comma and the word and, but, or or
Sentence Fragment
A word group that has no subject or predicate or does not express a complete thought
Run-On Sentence
Consists of 2 or more sentences joined without conjunction
Independent Clause
Another name for a simple sentence
Dependent Clause
Has a subject and a verb but CANNOT stand alone as a sentence for it has no complete thought
Complex Sentence
Consists of one independent Clause and one or more dependent clause.
Compound-Complex Sentence
Consist of 2 or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause
Analyze
examine methodically and in detail the constitution or structure of (something, especially information), typically for purposes of explanation and interpretation.
Infer
An inference is a logical guess that is made based on facts and ones own knowledge and experience
Interpret
explain the meaning of (information, words, or actions).
Summarize
To summarize is to briefly retell the main ideas of a piece of writing in ones own words
Compare
Identify the similarities of two or more subjects
Synthesize
To synthesize information means to take individual pieces of information and combine them in order to gain a better understanding of a subject
Photographs
a picture made using a camera, in which an image is focused onto film or other light-sensitive material and then made visible and permanent by chemical treatment, or stored digitally.
Captions
a title or brief explanation appended to an article, illustration, cartoon, or poster.
