Simple sentence
An independent clause with a single subject and predicate.
Complex sentence
One or more principal causes and one or more subordinate clauses.
Compound sentence
Two independent clauses joined by a coordinate conjunction (and, but, or) or a semicolon.
Compound-complex sentence
Contains two or more principal clauses and one or more subordinate clauses.
Cumulative sentence
Begins with the main idea and adds additional information, usually for description.
Denotation
Literal meaning of a word.
Diction
Word choice (formal, informal).
Didactic
Teaching, didactic work is instructive for teaching purposes.
Description
Describing something. Literally description.
Exposition
A comprehensive description of an idea.
Connotation
Implied or suggested meaning of a word.
Narration
Mode of writing that tells a story.
Argumentation
Develops or debates a topic in a logical or persuasive way.
Epanalepsis
Opening and closing a sentence with the same word or phrase.
Euphemism
The substitution of a mild or less negative word for a harsh or blunt one.
Epistrophe
Repetition of a word at the end of successive clauses or sentences.
Figurative Language
Language does not mean exactly what it says.
Foreshadowing
Building suspense by providing hints of whats to come.
Genre
A literary type or form.
Hyperbole
Deliberately exaggerates conditions for emphasis or effect.
Metaphor
A comparison without using like or as.
Extended metaphor
A sustained comparison that is developed throughout a piece of writing.
