Jokes explaining the different possible meanings of a word
Spoonerisms
Unintentional switching of word sounds within a sentence (verbal errors), transposing initial sounds or letters with two or more words.
Cliche
Phrases or opinions that are overused or have been overused in language. Portray a lack of original thought, and has lost some (if not all) of its original impact.
Metaphor
Nonliteral forms of figurative language are used for comparing two things. They usually have connotative meanings (how you would personally define something depending on your own personal experiences)
Idiom
Nonliteral forms of figurative language, To denote a particular meaning that is not related to the literal meaning of the individual words. No comparison, UNLIKE metaphors
Onomatopoeia
Words used to describe sounds
ex. “buzz” “bang”
Pangrams
Contains all letters of the alphabet within a sentence
Anagrams
Words or phrases that are created by rearranging letters of other forms of phrases
Palindromes
Words that read the same backwards and forewords “Hannah”
Paradox
A statement that appears to be contradictory but is actually true or valid (the statement contains two opposing forces or characteristics
Rebus
A word or a phrase that is portrayed by symbols, pictures, letters, or numbers to convey meaning (ex. L8R)
Concrete poetry
Words that are placed on a page in such a way that visually represents their meaning
Acrostic Poems
The first letter in each line of the poem spells out the subject of the poem
