1
Q
Identify one type of interspecific hybrid that does not produce fertile offspring
A
- Mule
- Liger
- Zonkey
2
Q
Identify the features of pioneer species
A
- Ability to fixate nitrogen
(allows them to fix atmospheric nitrogen into nitrates for nutrients –> important because the bare rock/land may contain poor nitrate content) - Tolerance to extreme conditions
(As ecological succession progresses, the environment becomes more stable and moderate. For pioneer species however, they will be subject to many extreme abiotic conditions at the beginning, so it is important that they will be able to withstand these conditions.) - Rapid germination of seeds
(This allows pioneer species to have more rapid proliferation of the area (r-strategists)) - Ability to photosynthesise
(This allows the species to obtain organic nutrients, ie. glucose, from inorganic factors, ie. sunlight, water, carbon dioxide, which is necessary in a barren, nutrient-poor area)
