Tragedy
A play with tragic events and having an unhappy ending for the main character.
Tragic Protagonist
A hero like protagonist in a tragedy who will be defeated and will suffer.
Antagonist
Someone who opposes or is hostile to someone or something. e.g Capulet and Montague.
Extended Metaphor
A version of a metaphor that extends over the couse of multiple lines, paragraphs, or stanzas of prose or poetry.
Soliloquy
When a character is saying their thoughts aloud without the other characters hearing.
Aside
A speech or sentence to the audience without the other characters hearing.
Hubris
Being very prideful and self-confident.
Hamartia
A fatal flaw which will lead to the downfall of a tragic hero.
Catharsis
The process of releasing, providing relief from strong emotions.
Dramatic irony
By saying something the opposite to something very clear for humorous effects.
Monologue
A long speech by one actor in a play.
Unrequited Love
When someone loves someone but the other person doesn’t have the same feelings for them.
Courtly Love
When two people love eachother but the love is forbidden. e.g Romeo and Juliet.
Volatile
When something changes rapidly and unpredictably for the worse.
Emotional
Have feelings that are easily excited.
Impetuous
Doing something quickly without any thought.
Machismo
Strong or aggressive masculine pride.
Antithesis
A person who is the opposite of someone else.
Reputation
The beliefs or opinions that are generally held about someone or something.
Mercurial
Subject to sudden or unpredictable changes of mood or mind.
Patriarchy
A system of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it.
Anarchic

Someone who acts on a whim, without thinking.
Tempestuous
Someone who is unpredictable and has many conflicting emotions.

Willing to respect or accept behaviour or opinions different from one’s own; open to new ideas.

Living or occurring at the same time.
Quixotic
Extremely idealistic: unrealistic and impractical.
Melancholic
A feeling of sadness typically with no obvious cause.

Qualities or attributes regarded as characteristics of men.

Going against what is perceived as the norm.

A sonnet is a short poem of 14 lines.
