Wool Lab Flashcards
Break
Temporary weakness in wool fibres caused by stress or illness, resulting in finer fibres with reduced strength at a specific point in the fleece
Bulk
A measurement of wool’s filling capacity, expressed in cubic centimeters per gram. Highly crimped wool generally has a higher bulk
Butt
The end of a wool staple that is shorn from the sheep, opposite the tip
Crimp
Natural waves in wool fibres, measured by the number of waves per unit length (crimps per cm)
Micron
The standard unit for measuring wool fibre diameter, equal to one-millionth of a metre
Sound
Wool with consistent tensile strength throughout the staple
Staple
A cluster of wool fibres that grow together in well defined bunches within the fleece
Strong
Wool with a larger fibre diameter, classified from extra-strong to extra-fine based on coarseness.
Tender
Wool with weak tensile strength at a particular point due to interrupted growth
