Woodwork theory: Flashcards
What is conversion?
Conversion is when logs are cut into usable boards in a sawmill.
What are the advantages of through and through sawing?
Fast method, low cost, not much waste.
What are the disadvantages of through and through sawing?
Prone to cupping, prone to fungal attack and lots of sapwood.
What are the advantages of quarter sawing?
Shrink less, silver grain pattern, length of rings are even.
What are the disadvantages of quarter sawing?
More labour, more expensive, more waste produced.
What are the advantages of tangential sawing?
Boards are strong, flame figure, range of wide boards produced.
What are the disadvantages of tangential sawing?
Prone to cupping, labour, waste produced.
4 reasons out of 6 why season our wood:
Dry wood is easier to work with, reduces MC of wood, can be controlled, prevents wood from splitting, fungi do not attack dry timber and lighter, harder and stronger.
What is 20% of MC?
Limit of air seasoned.
What is 16% of MC?
Outdoor furniture.
What is 10/12% of MC?
Indoor furniture.
Explain how natural seasoning works?
Timber stacks are stacked in a covered shed and allowed to air dry over the course of a year.
Advantages of natural seasoning?
Low tech, low cost method, low energy used.
Disadvantages of natural seasoning?
Slow drying rate, weather dependent, only dries boards to 18%-20% MC.
Explain how kiln seasoning works?
The timber planks can be placed in large oven-like rooms and dried out.
