What are soft woods???
Come from coniferous trees that have needles, they grow fast and are soft.
What are hard woods???
They come from broad-leafed trees
They are slow growing, the wood is normally hard but can be soft.
What are manufacher bords???
Timber sheets made by gluing wood layers ( veneers ) or wood fibres together,
E.g. MDF, hard board, chipboard, blackboard, plywood, laminboard.
Beech wood
Straight grained hard wood. Light in colour.
Very hard, but easy to work with and can be steam bent.
Used for furniture toys tool handles
Oak wood
A very strong light brown wood, open grained. Very hard but quite easy to work with.
High qualty furniture, beens used in buildings, veneers
Ash
Oped grained wood
Easy to work with
Can be laminated
Tool handles, sport equipment, furniture, ladder, veneers
Mahogany
Reddish in colour
And east to work with.
Indoor furniture, shop fittings, bars e.g. Wine pubs, veneers
Teak
A very durable oily wood
Golden brown in coluer highly resistance to moisture
Outdoor furniture, boat building, laboratory furniture.
Scots pine
Straing grained but knotty
Fairly strong but easy to work with
Inexpensive
Readily available for DIY work.
Parana pine
Hard and straight grained Almost knot free Fairly strong and durable Exspensive Hight quality pine furniture and fitings
MDF
M-medium D-density F-fibreboard
Can be painted or stained.
Avalbol in water/ fire resent form
Ofen coverd to improve epeaeance e.g. Veneered or painted
Hard bord
Cheep particle board
Can have a laminated plastik surface
Used for door panels covering curved surfeses
Chip bord
Made made form chips of wood glued together with urea formaldehyde
Usually veneered
Used - kitchen and bedroom furnishings, shelving and DIY
Ply wood
Strong, durabol warter and boiled proof (wbp) can be used,
Furniture making
Boat bulding and exsit our work
Block bord
Simler to ply wood but has a central layer from strips of timer
Used where heavier struchers needed
