Wood Processes Flashcards
Wood Laminating
-adhesive applied to the face of each veneer
-each veneer stacked on top of each other
-the veneers clamped into desired position till dry
Materials used for wood lamination
Birch
Disadvantages of wood lamination (2)
-restricted to bend in a single direction
-involves many steps
Advantages of wood lamination (4)
-can be combined with other materials to get stronger properties
-can accommodate different thicknesses
-creates strong and lightweight products and components
-suitable for one off batch
Steam bending (3)
-wood is encased in a steam box which can be made from PVC pipe
-must be entirely encased so that steam may saturate the entire length of the material
-wood steamed then softened
Advantages of steam bending (3)
-good aesthetic appeal
-most effective for bending solid wood
-can be done with simple equipment
Materials used for steam bending (4)
-hardwoods
-beech (furniture)
-oak (construction)
-elm (boats)
Disadvantages of steam bending (2)
-only high quality hardwood timbers can be used
-bend radius depends on material used
