Wood Flashcards

1
Q

How do you detect decay in a wood structure?

A

Stick a sharp pointed knife into the suspect area if it’s good it will come up as a long splinter , if it’s decayed it will come up as a chunk

Q

How is compression wood identified

A

It has a high specific gravity , it appears to have an excessive growth of summer wood and it has a little contrast between spring wood and summer wood

16
Q

Which species of wood I’d consider to be the slandered when comparing other woods for use in aircraft structure ?

A

Sitka spruce

17
Q

Why must abrupt changes in the cross sectional area of the wooden structure member be avoided ?

A

It concentrate stresses and can cause failures

18
Q

What if the basic difference between laminated wood and plywood ?

A

Laminated wood all of the grain runs in the same direction while plywood , the grain in layers crosses the others in 90 or 45 degree angle

19
Q

What effects does moisture have on wood aircraft structure ?

A

Moisture causes the wood to swell and crack while it drys out and it also allows fungus to develop in wood and causes it to decay

20
Q

Which wood is more inclined to wrap flat grain or vertical grain

A

Flat grain

21
Q

What is the recommended taper for a scarf patch in a plywood aircraft skin ?

22
Q

Why should sandpaper never be used when preparing a scarf joint in a wing spar for splicing

A

The dust caused by sand paper will plug the pores of the wood so glue won’t get in to form a good bond

23
Q

What is the largest hole in a plywood wing skin that can be repaired with a fabric patch ?

A

1inch in diameter

24
Q

Why are light steel bushing often used in bolt holes in a wood wing spar ?

A

The bushing keeps the spar from being crushed when the nut in the attachment bolt is tightened

25
How long should a glue joint be kept under pressure when splicing a wood aircraft wing spar
For atleast 7 hours
26
Which of a wood wing spar must not contain any splice
The must be no splice under the wing attach fittings , engine mount fittings , land gear fittings , or the lift and interplane strut fittings
27
What is done to a splice in a wood aircraft wing spar to strengthen the splice
Reinforcing plates are glued to both sides of the splice
28
Can northern white pine be used as a substitute for spruce ?
Yes but it must be increased in size to make up for its low strength
