What does deciduous mean?
It means that the tree drops their leaves in winter. Most hardwoods are deciduous

What is mahogany?
An expensive, imported, decorative hardwood
What is mahogany often used in?
Products that require a decorative finish.
Give a couple of examples of products that are made of mahogany
Furniture, doors, window frames, staircases.
What is beech?
A close grained hardwood that’s used in products that are exposed to wear and tear.

Breadboards, wooden spoons, furniture
What is ash?
A long grained and stable timber that is tough and flexible. Has good resistance to shock and can be used outdoors
What are some items that are made of ash?
Hockey sticks, cricket stumps, garden tool handles.
What is oak?
It is very decorative, hard, durable timber and is quite heavy.
What are some products that are made of oak?
Kitchen units, furniture, staircases

Trees that grew needles, instead of leaves and cones

Pine and cedar

No.

Usually they are Locally grown softwoods from managed forests

Pale (and have little grain marking)

When appearance is not important

Making moulds for vacuum forming
