Wood Flashcards
Hardwood
Hardwoods are generally harder than softwood and come from DECIDUOUS trees. These trees tend to have broad leaves that they shed in winter.
Ex: Mahogany, Beech, Ash, Oak, Elm
Softwood
Softwoods come from CONFIROUS trees, which are evergreen trees (they do not shed their leaves in winter) with needle-like leaves.
Ex: Pine, Spruce, Cedar, Fir
Wood
Wood, as a material, has been used to manufacture many products down through the years. Many products are made from different types of wood, depending on the specific properties of the wood. For example, a toy aeroplane could be made of Balsa wood because it needs to be light weight, while a chair needs good strength and rigidity and may be made from Pine.
Manufactured boards
These are man-made boards which are constructed by joining/gluing small bits of wood together. They can therefore be made into large sheets, which are designed to keep their shape without bending/warping.
Ex: MDF, Plywood, Chipboard, Blockboard and Hardboard
