inhibit osteoclast-mediated bone reabsorption –> enhances bone mineral density

adverse effects of bisphosphonates
HA, GI upset, joint pain
risk of esophageal burns if med lodges in esophagus before reaching stomach
risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw
possible severe bone, joint, or muscle pain
patient teaching for bisphosphonates
take at least 30 min before the first morning beverage or food with at least 6-8 oz of water
need to remain upright for at least 30 min after taking the med to prevent esophageal and GI adverse effects
adverse effects of oral contraceptives
HA, dizziness, breast tenderness, nausea, breakthrough bleeding, decreased libido, mood swings, weight gain
HTN thromboembolism, possible PE, MI, stroke alterations in lipid and carbohydrate metabolism increases serum hormone concentrations kidney stones gallbladder problems
drug interactions of oral contraceptives
antibiotics barbiturates isoniazid rifampin can decrease effectiveness of oral contraceptives
