women essay Flashcards
“which of you doth love us most”
playful unsuspecting tone, iambic pentameter, he is oblivous to the threat that is his daughters. Sees the love test as entertainment rather than a catalyst to his downfall.
Is oblivoun justified?
Arguably, Lear’s ignorance can be justified by considering the role of women during the Elizabethan era. During this time, women were expected to be obedient, subservient, and loyal to their fathers and husbands. Given this cultural backdrop, Lear would have had no reason to suspect his daughters of such ambitious and treacherous behaviour.
Regans proclamation
Regan’s plocamation is a paticular tour-de-force of empty rhetorical grandeur “i profess myself an enemy to all other joys,” the repititive stresses of “i profess / myself / i am,” coupled with the superlative piling “most precious sense,” amount to a masterclass in willfill flattery. Sonic mimicry through the alliterative “precious sqaure of sense,” highlights how artfully Regan employs language.
James 1st
Lears decision would have played in favour of king james 1st, as Shakespeare identifies with the dire catastrophic consequence of dividing a country, emphasising the positivity of his decision to unite the country.
Susan Boyle
“Lear’s actions are a catalyst, not a cause,” marginalises his central role in the play and cultability that he is the authoir of his own undoing. True, GR monstrous cruelty towards Lear stems from feeling slighted over customary inheritance laws, akin to Edmund’s gripe about barstardy. However, their brutal methods of reclaiming their percieved birthrights through heartless abuse of the aged, peniant lear cannot be excused simply as ambitious self interest.
hubristic love test
lear’s hubristic love test, prioritising flattery over actualised devotion showcased a tragic blidness to his daughters true nature. To treat him as a mere ‘catalyst,’ diminishes the gravitas of his moral failures as a vain, poor jusdge of character and arbitel of proper degree and justice.
