What were the effects of unemployment and poverty on women?
> first to be laid off, many sought work in low-paid domestic service
> they were not covered by the National Insurance and so many died of disease because of lack of means for medical care
> they often put their families’ needs before their own and as a consequence many were malnourished
> malnourishment meant higher death rates in childbirth and higher susceptibility to disease
> make ends meet
