Relationship with France
Wolsey wanted to create a better relationship with France and the holy Roman Empire so England doesn’t become isolated.
Military glory
Henry wanted to gain military glory.
Wolsey warned Henry against expensive wars but knew his job depending on keeping Henry happy.
Peacemaker
Mauzy wanted to have Henry seen as European peacemaker to gain prestige abroad and avoid expensive wars.
Treaty of London 1518
A universal peace between France England and Spain.
Top 20 leaders in Europe signed up to it including the pope.
It brought prestige to Henry and Wolsey and England was seen as an important country at the centre of European politics.
Field of cloth of gold 1520
A diplomatic meeting between Henry and Francis I of France.
A fortnight of feasting and Johnston with no expense spared as both Kings wanted to show off.
Unplanned wrestling match happened.
No agreements were actually made.
Treaty of Bruges 1521
An alliance between Henry and Charles V.
It’s agreed one year delay in sending an English army to France. Saved money and gained prestige.
Henry decided to annoy with Charles because of strong trade links and Henry married to Charles aunt Catherine.
War against France 1522-25
Henry declared war on France and agreed to attack Paris with Charles and the Duke of Bourban. 11,000 English troops.
Charles and Dukes troops never showed up and English were forced to retreat.
Charles use the English to distract the French so he could defeat them at the battle of Pavia.
The war had cost Henry £430,000 but he had nothing to show for it.
Treaty of Westminster 1527
England and France threatened to fight Charles if he didn’t prove relations with neighbouring countries.
Henry wanted to get an annulment from Catherine over our garden in 1527 who was the aunt of Charles.
