Wold Cities as Hegemonic Projects by Darel E. Paul Flashcards
Global City
A term not well defined, what is a global city?
A city where there’s major corporate HQ, finance leaders, worldwide service providers, trade office, major transit
Will attract international capital investment (money) via global identity
Will impact the world from their contribution.
is not unamusmt – but they have good transit, large buildings, business, money, global impact, outside investments
Wannabe World City
It hasn’t reached the state as a global city but, is building markers of worldliness to attain that status
Ex: Might build an international airport or bid to host a corporate (international) company headquarters which gives an image that the city is one their way to become a global city
Working on the image of the city so that the substance can come in
cities not there yet but they make similar decisions and developing to be global, they are building the signs or ads for a global city such as international airport or inviting companies to have their headquarters there working on their imagine
Imagineering
A concept that came from Disney. Imagine and engineering. The status of a city wants to become a global city and engineering it to become. A motion or exercise, that a wannabe city is exerting to become a global city.
imagining the image the city wants for themselves and engineering it
Global Connectivity
Ex: Palais des congress: Inside the wall of this building there is a lot of connectivity such as meetings, united nations conference, Comicon, ball en blanc, international auto show
Global Status
An object, an architecture, a building, or public place in the city has a status like the Eiffel tower, habitat 67 (Montreal) but it doesn’t necessarily do anything.
The status makes tourists take pictures with it
Cultural Capital
Montreal has lots of museum à cultural potential for a generating income from attendance.
Festival is a very high-level form of cultural capsules because people don’t only come to make business but also come as a tourist and celebrate with the many festivals happening in the city
Students are a form of cultural capital, your level of education gives you the potential for a better job, better earnings.
Skilled workers are a form of cultural capital
Montreal has 4 universities, so people can be hired by global corporate companies
Ex: Ubisoft (come to Montreal, because there is a lot of skilled workers)
for example the level of education give you the city a higher cultural capital - skilled workers are good capital
Cosmopolitan
Corporatist & globalist vision
Ex: airports all look the same. You can figure out where to go because it’s all kind of built the same way. (Cookie cuter cultures → form of placelessness)
The local identity has been erased in favour of a more universal identity
In the quest for the global city, you might end up with a representation of cosmopolitan culture.
relates to how does it represent the city relates to spectacular more organize for example airports they all are similar – cookie cutter cultural form of placelessness because it is a standard set for the world another example Starbucks have the same items everywhere.
Internationalism
Ex: poutine is defined locally. Although you can have those foods outside, global reach it still has an identity attached to the item that is related to a specific place.
Ex: Festivals are concerned too, like the just for laughs festival, reached an international audience but it’s not as cosmopolitan as the jazz fest because the jazz fest has emerged in different cities simultaneously while the just for laugh festival has strong roots in the Montreal. The identity of Montreal is engraved in just for laughs.
an example is the poutine it represents Quebec cultural and Montreal such as sushi is from Japan and has strong attachment to certain regions in the world.
Glocal
reflecting or characterized by both local and global considerations.
Montreal as a global city
1960-70 : expo 67, olympics, place des arts, metro, place ville-marie: all this infrastructure helped put montreal on the map by adding global status
1980s: Rise of Francophone Capitalists = Quebec Inc. led to neoliberal policy: privatization and deregulation due to government lobbying
Montreal’s GAIN
Re-branded, now a city of festivals
Hosting mega festivals, ex: the Jazz festival which had 1.7 M participants, large tourist attraction
Montreal’s LOSS
Small businesses, working class outcompeted by entrepreneurial class QC no longer leading social democracy, higher class not paying the taxes Decline in public services, ex: health care, much less investment from public sector
Connectivity vs status
status is public place or images or buildings that is well-known such as expo67, effile tower, it is a global value added to its city but not anymore nothing changes where connectivity with the place des arts they hold events and meetings that adds value to the city within the city and keeps adding value throughout the year
Staus adds global value but the people around do not
Connectivity is a site that the site as well as the people and activities adds global value
