WMM Flashcards
Who founded the working memory model?
Baddley and Hitch (1974)
Components of the working memory model
The central executive
Phonological leap
Visiuo spatial sketchpad
Episodic buffer
Why was the working memory model created?
To replace the short-term memory store in the multitool memory model due to criticisms of the short-term memory
Short-term memory must be more complex than just a single unitary store that only exists to pass on information to the long-term memory
Short-term memory must be an active process holding different types of information simultaneously while being worked on
Central executive
Controls attention allocate resources to slave systems and processes information from the sensory modaties
Capacity of the central executive
Very limited (four items) and focuses on one task at a time
Phonological loop
Handles, auditory and viable information divided into two components
What are the two components of the phonological loop?
Phonological store
Articulately process
Phonological store
A component of the phonological loop
The inner ear
Hold spoken words for a brief period of time
Articulately process
A component of the phonological loop
The inner voice
His words silently to prevent decay
Capacity of the phonological loop
Limited
Around two seconds of speech based information
Visiospatial sketchpad
Processes, visual and spatial information
What is the visiouspatial sketchpad divided into?
Visual cache
Inner scribe
Visual cache
Part of the VSS
Stores visual data such as shapes and colours
Innet scribe
Part of the VSS
Processes, spatial relationships and movement like navigating a map
Capacity of the VSS
Limited but can handle simple visual or spatial tasks
Episodic buffer
Added to the model in 2000
Integrates information from the phonological loop visio spatial sketchpad and long-term memory to create coherent episode
Capacity of the episodic buffer
Limited about four chunks of information
