WM2: Active chemical bark Flashcards
1
Q
Give the three environments we find an OH group in organic chemistry
A
Phenol
Carboxylic Acid
Alcohol
2
Q
What ion is formed that makes -OH groups acidic
A
Hydronium ion (H3O)+
3
Q
Put the following in order of increasing acidity
(low to high):
Phenol, Ethanol, Carboxylic acid
A
- ethanol
- phenol
- carboxylic acid
4
Q
What is the test for the presence of phenol?
A
Iron (III) Chloride will turn purple in the presence of phenol
5
Q
What are the reagents needed for esterification
A
Alcohol, Carboxylic Acid, Acid Catalysts*
*Not really a reagent technically
6
Q
Which is less acidic, water or ethanol?
A
Ethanol
7
Q
What are the key steps in recrystalisation?
A
- Select a solvent with high solubility at high temp and insoluble at low temperature
- Dissolve in the minimum volume of hot solvent
- Filter to remove insoluble impurities and collect the filtrate
- Cool the filtrate and collect the crystals by vacuum filtrate
- Dry the crystals in a low oven
8
Q
What is the ester functional group?
A
R-COOR
