WM 2.0 Flashcards
why is ethanol soluble but not hexanol
Hydrogen bonding between ethanol and water molecules make alcohols soluble. As the hydrocarbon chain gets longer, the importance of the -OH group relative to that of the alkyl group becomes less and hexanol is unable to mix with water
what will happen if an aromatic alcohol is exposed to excess refluxed potassium dichromate solution
If benzene ring present, despite being alcohol, will not turn green with excess refluxed potassium dichromate solution.
how to determine wavelength from wavenumber/absorption
1 over wavenumber = wavelength
outline 4 steps to recrystallisation
Dissolve solute in minimum quantity of hot solvent
Allow to cool and crystallise
Filter off the crystals and wash with a small amount of cold solvent
Dry the crystals
