(Wk4) Chemical Reactions Flashcards
What is Heterolysis?
When the pair of bonding valence electrons of a covalent bond move together.
What is Homolysis?
When the pair of bonding valance electrons of a covalent bond move separately.
What is a Nucleophile?
An electron rich species that is attracted to a positive centre hence carries a full/partial negative charge. It can DONATE a pair of electrons to form a covalent bond.
What is an Electrophile?
An electron-poor molecule that is attracted to regions of high electron density. They can accept an electron pair from a nucleophile and share it with a nucleophile to form a covalent bond.
What is meant by Bond Fission?
Bond Breaking
What do Curly arrows show?
The direction the electrons are moving.
What are Free Radicals?
An atom that has an unpaired electron. They are high in energy and are highly reactive.
What are the 3 mechanisms in Free Radical Substitution?
Initiation, Propagation and Termination
